Setting up a new iPhone
Getting a new phone is always exciting. However, for many, the joy can quickly be replaced by worries about setting up the new device – especially how to transfer contacts, photos, and data from the old phone to the new one. Fortunately, the process is much easier than you might think. Here’s a guide to help you get started with your new iPhone quickly!
Switching from iPhone to iPhone
All iPhones use Apple’s iOS operating system, and Apple has made it very simple to switch from one iOS device to another. Here’s how:
Option 1: Quick Start
- Turn on your new iPhone and place it close to your old one.
- Your old iPhone will receive a notification titled Set Up New iPhone. Tap Continue.
- A coded image will appear on your new iPhone. Use your old iPhone to scan the image.
- On the Transfer Data screen, select Transfer from iPhone.
- You’re done! Your new iPhone will automatically have all your apps, contacts, photos, messages, and other data transferred.
Note: Quick Start requires both devices to be running iOS 11 or later.
Option 2: iCloud Backup
- Back up your data and settings. Go to Settings on your old iPhone, tap your name (Apple ID), and select iCloud > iCloud Backup. Enable backup and tap Back Up Now.
- When your new iPhone is ready for setup, and after selecting the language and region, you’ll reach the Apps and Data screen. Select Restore from iCloud Backup.
- Log in with your Apple ID.
- Choose the most recent backup.
- That’s it! Your data will be transferred to your new iPhone.
Switching from Android to iPhone
When switching from Android to iPhone, there are more steps than when switching between iPhones. Fortunately, Apple has made it easy to transfer your data. You can move contacts, photos, videos, messages, email accounts, and calendars. Some apps available on both Google Play and the App Store can also be transferred and downloaded automatically.
How to Switch
- Download the Move to iOS app from Google Play on your Android device.
- Make sure both phones are plugged into power and that your Android is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Begin setting up your new iPhone. When you reach the Apps and Data screen, select Move Data from Android.
- Open the Move to iOS app on your Android. Tap Continue, read the terms, and tap Agree. Then tap Next.
- On your iPhone, tap Continue under Move from Android. A code will appear on the screen.
- Enter this code on your Android device. The Transfer Data screen will appear.
- Select the content you want to transfer to your iPhone and tap Next. Wait until both devices show that the process is complete. Do not use or move the phones during this time. The process may take a while.
- Once the transfer is finished, tap Done on your Android.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup of your iPhone.
Congratulations on your new iPhone!
